Alvor is now a very popular holiday location the enclosed narrow streets have kept development to a minimum. Alvor is een klein vissersplaatsje ongeveer 5 km westelijk van Portimão/Praia da Rocha.
Het plaatsje ligt aan een lagune welke zich opent op de Atlantische Oceaan.
In de gezellige smalle straatjes in het centrum zijn leuke winkeltjes, restaurants en gezellige barretjes te vinden.
Op zo'n 500 meter van Alvor vindt men één van de fijnste zandstranden van de Algarve.
